Great Falls, or Great Falls of the Housatonic, ( or Canaan Falls or Housatonic Falls) is a naturally occuring, dam-controlled 50+ foot waterfall.
The Housatonic River, being the second largest river in Connecticut, allows for one of the largest volume waterfalls 2nd only to the great Niagara Falls.
Usually the falls are not so impressive. Just above the falls is a dam. Most of the year all the water is diverted for power generation. Just a trickle is flowing. Only during the spring time floods or a dam release will the falls appear in all their glory.
